Accessible Playground Equipment - St. Basil's Catholic School

The proposed new, accessible and sensory-friendly playground equipment will serve both the St. Basil’s Catholic School and the community of White River. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and those who struggle with mobility and/or accessibility will have a safe place to play with their peers and families.

The Viking Room - Hammarskjold High School

The Viking Room will be a multi-use hub to support co-curricular activities throughout the school. This inclusive space would see intramural programming before/after school and at lunch time, as well as accommodate student-led activities such as event planning, team building activities and a general meeting space available to all students.

Make Gardening Accessible to All - Harvest Kenora
$10000 WINNER | 2021
Harvest Kenora operates a Collective Micro-Farm, called Homerun Gardens, which serves as a skill-share venue for new and experienced gardeners. This grant would allow the group to increase accessibility by providing amenities to allow people of all abilities and demographics to enjoy the garden. As well, the funding would allow for resources to better serve, educate and enable those who wish to grow food for themselves and others.

Cat Lake Hockey Rink

The community of Cat Lake puts together the best outdoor ice rink possible for the community’s children. The current plywood boards need to be replaced and the community would like to use treated 2 x 6” treated boards which will last much longer than plywood and provide a sustainable outdoor rink for years to come.

Snowshoes for Keewatin Public School Students - Keewatin Public School

Keewatin Public School would like to purchase two class sets of snowshoes to fit the primary and senior students to allow the entire student body to enjoy outdoor physical education time and the amazing Forest School program.

A Mile in my Mocs - Pope John Paul II School

Students will create care packages for expectant mothers at Faye Peterson House as a sign of hope for a fresh start with their new babies. Students will help design the materials, sew the baby items (hats, booties, blankets, neck warmers), decorate and pack the boxes, and document the project with a video.

Musical Instruments for Safe Bed - Canadian Mental Health Association - Kenora Branch

Music has been clinically proven to address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals. The purchase of musical instruments for the Safe Bed short-term residential program will assist clients on their road to recovery from mental health and addiction crises.

Community partners will conduct evening/night patrols to help people in need access services, making the community safe, enhancing people's well-being both mentally and physically, reducing crime, and being inclusive of all cultures and backgrounds.

Elementary school students at 9 Thunder Bay schools will be provided with non-perishable, nut-free, snack foods to be handed out at teachers' discretion, to children who don't have snacks or lunches.

Girls Night for the Girls

Girls Night out for the Girls is a lighthearted evening of fun and laughter to support those going through cancer treatment. The event raises funds for chemotherapy care bags to ease the financial and emotional burden for those undergoing treatment. The group will purchase supplies for the bags.

Shuniah Soil Mates

The Shuniah Soilmates are a keen group of gardeners who grow food and flowers together for themselves and local charities. They will purchase a rototiller to help in their efforts.

Gillies Volunteer Fire Department
$5000 WINNER | Spring 2019
The Gillies Volunteer Fire Association wants to build a live fire training facility using sea-cans. Having a local facility will deliver high quality training experiences without having to send firefighters to cost-prohibitive and time-consuming courses. Mutual aid partners departments will also benefit by training together to improve firefighting preparedness.

Dew Drop Inn Soup Kitchen

The Dew Drop Inn Soup kitchen is a safe, warm and welcoming place where hungry people can come to eat with no questions asked. Their goal is to build a community of care where they can come together as neighbours and friends to support each other. To support this mission, the Dew Drop Inn will be installing a new ventilation system in the kitchen to help keep its volunteers cool and comfortable while they give their time.

Codeabotkids
$1500 WINNER | Spring 2019
Codeabotkids is an enthusiastic group of engineers who want to see coding and robotics in classrooms to awaken interest in STEM fields. This funding will help enable engineers, technologist educating students and teachers deliver coding and robotics to local schools in a fun, clear and challenging manner. As parents and engineers, the group observed a gap in coding and robotics in the Ontario education curriculum and they want to see youth physically interacting with the coding they create.

Promoting the Arts - St. Ignatius Drama Department

With a submission entitled “Promoting the Arts,” the St. Ignatius High School Drama Department has a goal of promoting the drama department to all students at the school. The funding awarded will be used to purchase the technology and supplies needed to make activities more impactful.

StandUp4CleanUp
$500 WINNER | Spring 2019
StandUp4CleanUp was born out of Joshua Hewitt’s love for the land and his community. During a turbulent time in his life when he was homeless, Joshua took to the streets and created positive change within himself and his surroundings. StandUp4CleanUp has since evolved into a way for everyone to feel like part of the solution and part of their community with purpose and a sense of belonging. It’s about taking pride in our beautiful home, our natural landscapes and waterways. The program is propelled by volunteers and community partnerships, fostering positive relationships with local businesses and organizations.
StandUp4CleanUp was recognized in 2018 for outstanding contribution to safety and wellbeing in Thunder Bay through the annual Mayor’s Community Safety Awards. The group will now be using their Tbaytel for Good Funding to expand the program, increasing its ability to address litter and beautify Thunder Bay.

Red Lake Family Entertainment Series
$500 WINNER | Spring 2019
The group is working to bridge the gap created by a lack of teenage dramatic arts in their community. They received funding to bring in Green Thumb Theatre’s production entitled “The Code” this November, but were in need of the remaining $500. The Code is a production that deals with harassment and cyberbullying. The plat challenges teens to hold themselves accountable for their words and actions and consider what’s at stake when lines are crossed. It provides connections to the curriculum through: healthy relationships, leadership, social responsibility, self-esteem, personal politics and violence against women. After the play, the production will also include time for a Q&A with the actors.

Kenora Curling Club - Everyone Curls

Everyone Curls is an initiative that focuses on building participation in the sport of curling at the Kenora Curling Club and the community. Through the purchase of storage, teaching, technical and participant equipment, as well as facility rental, the club's ultimate goal in Everyone Curls is to introduce the community to curling, increase and sustain participation, increase membership and club viability, making curling a sport that can be enjoyed at all levels of participation.

Township of Nipigon - Edge Arts

In January 2019, the new 'edge ARTS' youth arts hub, a 1600 sq. ft. multi-use space in Nipigon, will be ready to open! The Township of Nipigon would like to kick off programming with a free "creator/maker" focused drop-in program for youth aged 12-18 from Nipigon, Red Rock and the Red Rock Indian Band. With the purchase of tables, chairs, tools and materials, the space will be ready to host its first program. Participants will be connected with a project leader and local volunteer artists, which will help promote positive self esteem in our local at-risk youth and encourage aspiring young artists to continue exploring their creativity.

Project Purse

Started by high school student Faryn Gysen, Project Purse provides gently used purses filled with different items that benefit women in need, from toothbrushes to shampoo to jewelry. Entering into its 4th year, Project Purse would like to raise awareness about the program with an event and promotional material and purchase additional items to fill more purses for distribution through partner organizations, including small-denomination gift cards for restaurants so the recipients can also purchase a meal.

St. John School Ski Club - Cross Country Skis for the Ski Club

The winters in Red Lake may be long and cold, but the students in the St. John School Ski Club pass the time with cross country skiing! Currently there is not enough equipment for the number of students participating and the majority of what the club does have is over 20 years old. The school would like to be able to achieve the goal of having enough pairs of skis to allow every child interested in cross country skiing to participate in this fun physical activity, bringing the community together.

Fort Frances Community Garden

The Fort Frances Community Garden and Kids Garden Club is centrally located and is used by 100+ gardeners from ages 3-83! The garden benefits the entire community - kids learn new food skills; people are able to gather in a safe and welcoming place where lots of learning and sharing happens among gardeners and neighbors; children, families and adults are able to grow their own local food; and the garden produces locally grown food for donation to the local soup kitchen and food bank. The funding will help expand the garden to include more raised beds to accommodate more citizens of all ages and abilities.

Thunder Bay Quilters’ Guild

The Thunder Bay Quilters’ Guild donates quilts to various organizations in Thunder Bay, which are multi-use and enjoyed by residents and care recipients for several years. A two-day quilt bee would result in charity quilts and have a positive impact beyond just guild members. They promote community involvement, giving back to the community, friendship and camaraderie, but also expansion of the arts in Thunder Bay, proliferation of this art form and comfort through the organizations receiving quilts for beds in a number of facilities throughout Thunder Bay.

Blacksheep Mountain Bike Club

The Club will build a 400-450m kid-friendly development trail at Kinsmen Park. This trail will help introduce young riders to the sport of mountain biking and foster a love of the sport and healthy activity.

Matawa Learning Centre Good Neighbour Program

In the fall of 2018, the Matawa Learning Centre will be moving from its current location in downtown Port Arthur to a new school site at the retired Grandview Lodge. As staff and students shift into their new community setting, they want to build strong and lasting connections with their neighbours. To do this, the students wish to offer services free of charge and host community events that will help bring their neighbourhood together. This includes shoveling snow, mowing lawns, cleaning yards and hosting activities like harvest celebrations, community feasts and a community garden.

McKellar Park School – Activity and Academics

With evidence identifying a direct link between activity and academics, McKellar Park School will purchase integral pieces of equipment for the school that will increase student activity. Increased activity and fitness enables students to focus, think, work and communicate and will provide McKellar Park students with problem solving skills and coping mechanisms long after they leave the classroom

Thunder Bay Giants Barbell Club
$1500 WINNER | Spring 2018
The Thunder Bay Giants Barbell Club is the only olympic weightlifting club registered with the Ontario Weightlifting Association (OWA) in northwestern Ontario. The club will purchase equipment necessary to promote and grow the sport of weightlifting in Thunder Bay. The funding will also support the club’s ability to provide competitions and officiating, allowing local athletes to experience the sport at a competitive level and helping them qualify for larger competitions without the extra expenses of travelling to southern Ontario.

St. Joseph’s School - Nutrition on Weekends

St. Joseph’s School currently offers healthy food at school through a snack program and daily breakfast program that is available to all students, free of charge. Weekends have been identified as a gap for students experiencing poverty and St. Joseph’s School will use the funding to continue their Nutrition On Weekends (NOW) program, allowing them to send healthy food items home and contribute to student success, health and wellbeing.

Red Lake Residents - Let’s Liven Up Laverty

Laverty Park is the only municipal park within walking distance for many Red Lake families and this project will allow for park enhancements that include picnic tables for seating, as well as shared play items and equipment for children and families to enjoy.
